Heather asks Andrew...

One of the addresses from last week's Council meeting included a letter from a member of the public to Andrew Smith, Labour MP for Oxford East, who had said over Christmas that he thought having a swimming pool in Cowley would be a good idea. Shame his local party ignored the public and closed Temple Cowley Pools in December 2014. Here's Heather reading out her letter at the Council meeting. The sound is not brilliant, so there's a transcript of her letter below the video.

Public Challenge the Council - Again - see video

Last Monday was another Full Council meeting. We don't want to be there, but there are many questions to answer. The Council can still tell Catalyst to wait until after a successful planning application before demolishing Temple Cowley Pools; the Council could still work with the Save Temple Cowley Pools Campaign and Catalyst to create a brilliant community space, a new hub for the Cowley area, at NO COST to the public; the Council could still be open about its dealings with Ca...

City Council Propaganda 'Spins' into Overdrive

Fair Comparison? This image is grossly misleading - Temple Cowley Pools doesn't have a sports hall

Our wonderful Oxford City Council has its masters of propaganda working overtime to show how much 'value' we’ve all got from their £13m+ investment in a new box containing a 25m swimming pool in Blackbird Leys.

Some eagle-eye...

1st Anniversary of Closure

Posted on December 28, 2015 at 5:05 AM Comments comments (0)

On 23rd December 2015 a demonstration marked 12 months on from Oxford City Council ignominiously closing Temple Cowley Pools, with people still inside the building. It didn’t make sense then, and it doesn’t make sense now. The building is still closed, people are exercising less frequently or not at all, just as we predicted. And no sign of any new development, apart from a continued threat of dem...

Request to Councillors

Posted on December 11, 2015 at 6:05 PM Comments comments (1)

After last Monday's Council Meeting  (see separate post), one of our members, the Director of the community interest company set up to propose a Community Asset Transfer of Temple Cowley Pools, sent an open email to all of the councillors. Essentially, the Council is still in control of the Temple Cowley Pools site, and Catalyst is only proposing to demolish the building now because they've been told to by the Council.

So a call to action for ou...

Why Aren't the Public Interested?

Posted on June 12, 2015 at 12:25 PM Comments comments (0)

Possibly the biggest issue faced by local government and democracy in the UK at the moment is lack of engagement. People simply can't be bothered to engage with their politicians because they think they simply can't make a difference. We see this with the ridiculously low turnouts at local elections; people think that Labour will get in again so what's the point? What's the point of complaining, campaigning, tr...

Swimming Pools - Oppression All Over the World

Protesters demonstrating in the swimming pool of the Monson Motor Lodge in St. Augustine, Fla., scream as motel manager James Brock dumps muriatic acid into the water on June 18, 1964.

Bettmann/Corbis

It's so easy to think of saving our health and fitness centre in Temple Cowley as a very local affair, but it helps from time to time to see the wider cont...

Easter at Temple Cowley Pools

Posted on April 6, 2015 at 5:00 PM Comments comments (0)

As the weekend approached, we were asked by the Oxford Mail to have a photo shoot at Temple Cowley Pools. We duly obliged, not without some waiting around, so we took advantage and here's a couple of videos. One showing the outside, with those responsible clearly labelled (see above). The other a view inside. It's still there, and we believe the Council can do what it knows it really should be d...

March 2015 Campaign Update

Posted on March 29, 2015 at 12:30 PM Comments comments (0)

The local media have noticed that it’s been three months since the Labour Council’s decision to finally close Temple Cowley Pools and sell the site to Catalyst for housing development, apparently guaranteeing them planning permission for twice the permitted housing density, breaching the Council’s own core policies. There is a three month time limit on bringing Judicial Review proceedings. The Campaign announced on hearing about the closure, and to a council m...
